Giola (Histori)

Giola (Histori)
On the southeastern part of Thassos , there ia a residential area, Astris or Astrida, which according to old traditions got its name from the residents of Theologos, especially those who would travel to the area for olive picking with clear skies during olive season.
This place is known for three reasons:

1.        That it has the best climate all year round. It has the most mild and temperate climate, without any excess or problems.
     2. It has the best drinking water. Cool, clean and digestable.
     3.   It has the best starry sky.
Exactly opposite the housing there is an island, uninhabited and barren, which is called Astriotiko or Panagia.
From tradition, it has been know that this was the island of the sirens who according to homer enchanted sea travelers with their majestic soon. Opposite this island is Giola.

Two kilometers from  there, is the area KALAMI which belongs to the residential area Astris. Giola is situated in this area.                                             Giola,   is a miracle of nature, the things nature creates when she is a good mood (and in Thassos the homerasian travelers had had plenty of good moods with their songs and melodies, under the clear skies of Homeric time).
According to legend, the lake is the eye of Zues, which he used to spy on his wife.    According to another legend, Zues created Giola for Aphrodite to bathe in. Thus Giola is also known as “Aphrodite’s tear”.
Giola is difficult to describe. It is just Giola.  A natural pool with crystal turquoise water! Unique,  unrivalled. Something nature and sea created between rocks.
They created a lee pool, almost like a private area. On its one side its slate is highest, and from there the daring drive off. The two other sides are lower which reach the sea and touch its surface. The rocks throughout the area are white with exception to those which touch the surface of the sea, since the water of the sea has darkened their colour. Its slight downward glat surface makes it a great place for sunbathing and taking relaxing naps. Giola might not have large dimensions, but it is sensational. You need to just be a little careful when getting there and you shouldn’t go barefoot.
The same safety precautions should  be taken when swimming in Giola. First, prudence and care should be taken especially when you drive off the high areas. There are oversized rocks at the bottom and you never know what could happen. Secondly when the tribe is up, the sea carries a lot of water into Giola, so if someone is swimming calmly in the water, the waves could pull you in, and you could burst onto the rocks. This however shouldn’t alarm you!!  These are just some of the things you should be aware be of, so that you can indulge and enjoy your experience at this magnificent place you your heart’s content.              Without worry.
